Professional Practice - Beginning to look at media related jobs

In order to make myself more informed about potential jobs in the world of media, I will take a look at various different jobs in the industry. I am very unsure of which route to take in my life; something which I have always struggled with is pinning down what job i want to do one day. As such I have taken a look at numerous different jobs int he creative media industry and written about them. Each different job has its own headline and writing about it underneath.

Fashion Designer

One of these jobs I will look at is a costume designer. Fashion is of general interest to me, I run a fashion "diary" on Instagram and take a keen interest in it overall. As such, a costume designer might be a good job for me to consider in the future. As one can most likely guess, the main job of a costume designer is to design the garments for characters in the film. They frequently work alongside other members of a film crew including the director, the scenic, make-up artist, wig master and hair stylist. Costume design is vital for numerous reasons, including making a production look professional and extending the characters personality to a physical form. As such it is important that the costume designer gets the design of the costumes right in order to make sure that it is fits in well with the production, the characters and what the directors and other members of the crew have specified they would like the designs to resemble. It is a general expectation that costume and fashion designers are well informed about the world of fashion, in order to yield the best possible results. I like to think I am pretty well acquainted with different fashions, periods, styles and so on, and as I count it as something i am interested in. As well as this, I also have designed numerous different takes on superhero costumes before, thus my "range" regarding costume design is fairly wide.

Casting Director

Another job which I may take under consideration is that of a casting director. A casting director, generally in fairly major to moderate productions such as film or a television series is in charge of much of the daily work involved with pre-production, including casting. Casting would be of interest to me because frequently when I watch films and shows I like to comment on the cast and sometimes talk about different actors I would rather have been cast, or sometimes, especially in the case of already well established characters (such as in major franchises and so forth with are able to be recast) I like to talk about who I would cast in that role. As a result, I like to think I have a generally good basic eye for casting, and should go further in that, so a casting director or someone involved with the selection process of casting may be a suitable job for me to have.

Screenwriter

A third job which I could take under consideration is a screenwriter. I have written out the outlay of plots and stories before, and creating a plot and storyline for a film or television show is of interest to me. With my creativity, especially with character interaction, character's personalities/looks and so forth, and also with storylines in general, I think this would be a suitable job for me. With screenwriters being a freelance profession, that would be of further appeal to me, as being a freelance would be something that would likely appeal to me. All of this considered, I think a screenwriter may perhaps indeed be a suitable potential job for me in the future; it's a job I could stay at home for and would most likely not require me to have to get up and be somewhere by a certain time, not very often anyway. As such, this profession would most likely suit me well.

Showrunner

A fairly similar job to a screenwriter, but may be of more interest to me is a show-runner. A show-runner often has duties which combine tasks usually assigned to the head writer, executive producer, and script editor. Whilst in films directors have creative control of a production, in television shows the showrunner outranks them. For a start I generally prefer television shows to films and as such would have more interest in being involved with television than films. I believe I could conceive numerous different shows in the long-run, as such being a showrunner is a job which would be quite appropriate for me. particularly with potentially long-running shows, plotting the mythology for the show and then seeing how a show of my creation plays out would be of satisfaction to me. In addition to just the plot, the showrunner has influence in basically every aspect in a show, including the music used and the people hired. Due to these factors, I believe being a showrunner would definitely be a career that I would like to consider to one day have.
