Analysis of Jobs within the Creative Media Industry

Here is a look at some different jobs within the creative media industry, and some of the requirements needed to do such a job.

Casting Director

A casting director is generally the person who is responsible for assigning roles in films, television shows and plays. They work with the director and producer to make sure they know what vision they have for their production and as such assemble the best possible cast. In addition to this, a casting director will arrange and conduct interviews along with auditions with potential actors/actresses. Some requirements to be a good casting director include having a broad knowledge & interest in film and actors, have at least a basic understanding of how to operate a camera, be a good communicator, recognise talent and have good organisation skills. For me to meet these requirements, I will need to improve my people skills as well as acquire a broader knowledge of the various different ways the industry works; for example learning more about acting styles/methods as well as an actors requirements to act in a movie will be helpful.

Screenwriter

Screenwriters generate the screenplays for a production and provide the blueprints for many members of the film crew to follow, including the director, producer, production designer, editor and so on. Some of the requirements to make a good screenwriter include having an in-depth understanding of the story, plot and narrative of a production, being ambitious but realistic at the same time, handle constructive criticism well along with effectively acting upon it, having a good understanding of the multiple different ways which films can affect its audiences, being familiar with the current formats for presenting screenplays, having the ability to successfully demonstrate a creative imagination, being able to bring the characters in the production to life, good organisation as well as dedication. In order for me to meet such requirements, there are numerous things which I need to improve upon; namely my organisation skills will need significant improvements, as well as my understanding of the ways a successful screenplay can be created.

Producer

A producer has overall control over a production; they bring together and then approve or disapprove upon the whole crew. One vital responsibility which a producer has is to create an environment where all the crew can work together well. Some of the requirements of a producer include good financial and business sense, experience within the film industry, strong motivations, have good creative visions, excel in problem solving, negotiating and motivating their team, as well as having superb communication skills, be able to handle pressure & stress well, and understand the overall creative processes of film-making. For me to be able to make an effective producer, there are many of these skills which I would require to improve upon. Some of these include bettering my team-working skills, learning more about business & finance, get a better understanding of the film industry, but most importantly drastically improve upon dealing with stress and pressure.
