Observing the Differences in Working Methods
There are numerous different working methods in film-making; two prime examples of these include freelancing and contractual work.
A freelancer is a self-employed worker and generally tend to work from their own premises, and often work simultaneously on numerous different projects at the same time. Meanwhile a contractor will be employed by an agency and as opposed to working simultaneously on different projects for multiple clients, someone who is contracted will instead usually work only on a single project for a single employer at a time, as well as doing this full-time as opposed to potentially the part time work a freelancer will do.
There are numerous pro's and con's to each of these; some pro's of freelancing includes being able to work from home, having greater control of the projects they may or may not undertake, greater freedom and flexibility in their work than their contracted counterparts, and a greater variety of different work which they may find exciting. However con's of freelancing include variable income, lack of job security, a lack of paid time off work, less resources than their contracted counterparts as well as being subject to an extra self-employment tax.
Some of the pro's of contracted work include job & wage security, paid time off work, greater resources at hand than freelancers, pay for overtime and overall less of a workload. However con's of being contracted include regimented & stricter working hours, less control over the work they undertake and are answerable to more peopel than a freelancer, such as a boss.
