Rick Astley Video

Yesterday the entire class embarked on a collaboration. For about a couple of hours we all did some brainstorming, and eventually we agreed upon doing a music video for Rick Astley's cheeky classic. We nearly decided on using several different songs, but when it became apparent I was the only one not refusing to mime the song to the camera, we decided it would be best to use a song I basically know the lyrics to...and this was one of the only options as I have a terrible memory. Numerous different ideas for the video were discussed. We contemplated either shooting outside and around town, or inside the TV studio. The TV studio was almost unanimously selected. As for the actual premise of the video, numerous options were discussed, eventually we decided that a party would be the best option.

We then spent the next three or four hours preparing the scene, including buying numerous party items (balloons, glitter for some bizarre reason, Mr Tickle table cloths, party poppers and Jammy Dodgers that Dan ate most of and as such weren't even on screen). In addition to this, tables were brought into the TV studio, numerous chairs, a big comfy chair for lil' old me as I was the singer and needed to stand out, as well as a sofa in the background. The big chair and sofa were elevated by a stage in order for them to both be higher than the table. Numerous lights were deployed in order to give the room a more party-worthy atmosphere, including fairy lights in the background and a large multi-coloured party lamp in front of us, which probably helped decay my eye-sight. We had numerous people on the set, including six in front of me sat around the table, and two behind me in order to make the room look filled more than it actually was, appropriate for a party. Finally, in addition to the default studio lights being set up, we put lots of balloons on the table to complete the party vibe.

Three cameras were used; one in front of me and one on each side of me in order to catch as much relevant footage. Initially we planned on using the cameras already in the TV studio, but they did not work in the format we required, 50 frames per second, so we resorted to using the regular Canon cameras. We filmed using 50fps and then by the time editing got underway, it was slowed down. However in order to keep in time to the music, the song had to be sped up by double the amount and as such I needed to mine it at a fast pace. Other than me, who was miming and moving in a weird sort of dancy way (I'm not sure, I just did what felt appropriate), everyone in the video played with balloons and used party poppers to give the video a partying feel and look. The whole thing was filmed in one single shot, but with three cameras in use in different positions, that'll break up the video.
